Tecmos, in case I have missed it - do you ever record the footage?
I haven't, only screenshots. I play on a mediocre laptop, not sure how video recording while doing this stuff would work out on it. That'd be fun though. Maybe I'll see about getting some fraps-ish thing on my desktop and doing some of the more interesting fights again with video instead of just stills... eventually. Maybe I'll go get Dartain again and video it so that I can feel better about getting to him solo, lol [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I'm glad that so many people enjoyed reading my kill stories and checking out the screenshots and stuff. I really had a blast with the challenge! I probably wouldn't have kept playing p99 if I hadn't rolled up Tecmos with the aim of working on this, but it's now been nearly 7 months since my first solo kill and it was a couple months before that when I made Tecmos!

Thanks for all the help I got with strategies, rez/CR help, and chitchat while trying to pop nameds that I got, especially from Loraen, Daire, Drumas, Briscoe, and the former Iznog.

Short of working on breaking fear solo or maybe (BIG maybe) doing some duo grandmaster kills, I'm probably going to be back to farming and playing a couple alts now... although I do have an idea for something inspired by my stories in this thread that I might jump into here soon [You must be logged in to view images. Awesome stuff!

Shouldn't part of the solo artist challenge be clearing in there all by yourself?

IE: If Tranix is up, I can go in there by myself with consumables and kill him? Or get the charmed pet completely solo also?

Still, good kill.

Yeah, help is a bit cheesy, though I've gotten the impression over the course of this thread that there is some wiggle room (it even says as much in the first post, really), especially when it comes to the named giants, since it is basically impossible to find this whole area of solb fully spawned. There was some discussion on point when someone, I think it was Svenn, solod tranix without his guards up.

Found the discussion:

After some discussions I think I'm going to allow any Tranix/Rokyll kill since it seems possible to get them solo fairly easily anyway and the biggest problem is just finding them up.

Now I do feel a little bad about duoing around in hole, but not TOO bad, seeing as we took a route that was far harder to do duo than just dropping in with a DA idol then soloing to Dartain would have been! [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

To me, it doesn't seem inherent to the challenge. It would probably just make these challenges much longer to undertake, and deter more people.

Being alone from the time you set foot into the zone until you loot the named's corpse is definitely inherent to the challenge. It is MUCH harder to learn your way into/around south and east and the hole than it is to kill an individual named mob. Even with the warmup fights, basically anyone who tries them is much more likely to die trying to get to the named in north (or even lguk) than to die fighting a solo level 50 warrior mob.

Yeah, it makes things more of a grind that you can't just smoke PHs in crypt with a group until you pop one and then pull it solo and smoke it in a safe spot by itself, but it definitely adds to the "solo" and "artist" and "challenge" parts of this also. A lot.

Buttt, that being said, I can't help but feel like it's not really cheating to have help sometimes. Plowing through a dozen level 50 trash mobs in hole with a cleric healing my pet and then IVUing the rest of the way to dartain didn't really make that specific encounter any easier than it would have been truly solo... it just sped up the boring and generally simplistic part of the kill, like getting a double invis or having a rogue pick a lock instead of clearing/lulling/whatever.

This.

As a wizard, it's not that interesting or challenging to root a mob and nuke him to death. The most interesting part is getting there by yourself, pulling that named and managing the adds.
