I hear a lot of bemoaning about multi-classing and how it homogenizes the player-base but I wonder how many people play a ranger here on P99? Okay, now how many play a monk, instead?

See what I'm getting at? I mean, really.

It's not the multi-classing part that's the problem. Hybrid classes have basically always existed since the dawn of MMORPGs. It's the "You can switch to any class you want at anytime" part. That shit is GAY.

I don't want to be able to switch classes at any time I want. Make a unique hybrid? Yeah that would be cool, but if I just want to switch between classes I will make new characters to adventure with thank you.

Also I am at work so I wasn't able to watch absolutely everything (almost though), I didn't catch mention of open world dungeons or instances or the like, did they mention anything about that?

Yeah, hybrids are fine... but I think it's a better idea to have it developer created. Min/maxing will come into play otherwise and everyone will be using the same templates.

I remember when Asheron's Call first came out, no one had any idea what they were doing. They were just spreading their points all over the place, picking what sounded cool. Then after a few months, players had found out the best hybrid combinations and everyone was rerolling.

I think you are inadvertently proving our point, ranger was the combo that went too far in the wrong direction and got left at the wayside till Luclin. Its another option to play with sure, but hardly anyone does because it is obviously not optimal, thus monks and everything else.

The other classes weren't like this because they had something (more or less) that they could excel at in a meaningful way in a variety of situations. Rangers got boned in that department.

I don't care for min/maxing in any game, and if I end up playing EQNext I'll pick my class for RP reasons.

EDIT: More options is always better for RP.

In EQ, mobs will rape you. You can't go barreling into a room full of mobs and do a whirlwind, spam your abilities, and they all die.

Unless you severely outlevel or outgear the content, you will get raped unless you use some strategy, or cooperate with other players. You need to CC, slow, attempt to single pull, etc. Difficult content forces interaction, or at least some level of planning/strategy.

Having to interact with other people to get something done is a lot more fun and fulfilling, in my opinion, than watching my avatar bash some harmless mob into the ground with a billion particle effects and huge numbers. I don't want this game to be Socially-Augmented-Single Player, I want to to be Massively Multiplayer, with a community, reputation, etc etc.

I'm sure the raids will be very difficult. Beyond that; who cares how hard pve is? Players will always need to be organized and attentive in pvp, which is obviously the most important gameplay aspect.

Not everyone likes PvP.
