They aren't a rival, Russia is a shithole. Their only threat to us is nuclear.

Ukraine is a shithole also.

They are a rival in that they actively and effectively work against US interests. They interfere in our elections, they try to astroturf and brainwash on social media in an attempt to stoke discord and divisions, they literally put a bounty on the heads of US soldiers. And perhaps most of all, they have over 1,000 nukes pointed at us (and we at them).

They may pale in comparison when it comes to actual power, but they are still a threat, and consistently cause damage.

Ukraine is corrupt, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and the potential benefits of adding a once vital piece of Russia to the Western sphere are immense. Imo, even if Ukraine were 10x worse than they are, it'd still be worth every penny by virtue of how many Russians they're putting in the ground.
