I've never played WoW, but I have friends that do. I'll probably give it a whirl one of these days. I have tried and enjoyed both DAoC and ShadowBane. DAoC had outstanding trade skills, the Thane class, and quests from the Lady of the Lake. ShadowBane had a very innovative character generation system. Neither game kept my attention through the higher levels.

I never played it. My son played it.. a lot... He started out on EQ with me on Drinal. Then the first progression servers came out and I jumped over to one of them. He played a fair while on EQ but then decided to try WoW as his friends were playing it.
Personally, I could never see myself getting into it due to the monster types and names. I grew up playing AD&D (on paper) and so EQ was a great match as they had all of the AD&D type monsters in it. I have no interest in playing WoW and can say with confidence that I never will. If I felt like playing a different game, I'd go back to EQ2 or wait for EQ Next.

I never bought it, never installed it, never played it once, despite my brother trying to sell me on it.

Played WoW from it's start on and off again until a little after Cataclysm was released.
When it came out I thought it was a great game. It was and still is an extremely polished game. (EQ would at times frustrate me with the number of broken quests). Good content PvP was balanced was pretty balanced for a PVE game. The game became kind of unplayable at a lot of points because of all the work done to dumb down the game and the resulting juveinelle player base. The cost of repairs became so miniscule that it wasn't really a penalty anymore and the lack of necessity to group or develop skills to level from 1 to max created a player base that was anti-social, greedy, and totally inept at playing their high level characters. I've played several MMOs - EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, Star Trek Online, Rift, Warhammer Online, and a few more and I have always thought that EQ pre-GoD was the best experience. This might be biased by it being my first graphical MMO. WoW was pretty good early on and for part of Lich King. Vanguard wasn't bad but was barren and was unfortunately released prematurely. Rift was fun but I'm not really into the story and don't have the time for it.

But all I know is the reason I can't play WoW or seriously play on an emulated WoW server is because the community is horrible.

I played from release to Cataclysm on a PVP server, and at times on a blue server as well. The things that drove me insane about WoW were:
1: The playerbase. It's been discussed to death already. 2: EZ Mode. Nuff said. 3: No ability to kite. This one infuriates me. Why is it that only EQ and Vanguard have had enough balls to allow this interesting and fun mechanic to flourish? Mob chaining was the DUMBEST idea to ever hit MMORPGs. Period. You should be chased to your death by an angry monster unless you run DAMN far away. Period.
