Any resemblance that I may bear to any mildly bitchy side characters, living or dead, in any form of media, is purely coincidental.

I am absolutely pro-enforcement of the original naming rules within the world of Norrath.
When I was Guide for EQ it was my everlasting joy to get tickets for names to review and get them nerfed when needed. There's no point in having naming rules if they aren't enforced. I've been in several MMOs, run multiple guilds, and those games that actually enforce their rules end up having better player bases overall. It sends a message to trolls, and the like, that they either need to play nice with others or find someplace else to play. There's really no excuse for a name that violates the naming policy. The rules aren't that hard to follow. And yes, dumb names that have nothing to do with the genre, world, or lore do, in fact, break immersion for other players who have to look at that bad name or interact with that dumb character. It's passive-aggressive trolling to intentionally have a bad name just because one thinks it's 'cute' or funny. It's not difficult to create a decent in-genre name. If one truly lacks the IQ or mental skillset to create a decent name, go find a fantasy name generator. There are dozen of those out there on the net. (I'm new here and bound to make friends, or enemies, with this post! Of course, that's not my intention, but I know some people are just as passionate about a free-for-all naming policy as I am about nerfing every Ganddalf*, Jedimazter*, Toasterlover*, Lordoveru*, Crackpleasre*, etc there is.[You must be logged in to view images. If someone is actually named one of those names, then it's purely coincidental... and shame on you! [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] | ||

After over 20 years of playing MMOs, I agree with the poster above that suggested that no one should be allowed to name themselves. ...Because clearly after 2 decades of watching people name their characters f@#ked-up names, too many just have no idea how to RESPECT the world they are in or the players who have to see their idiotic names floating over their heads. I think everyone should be forced into auto-generated names (in one way or another, like you get some options, etc) and if you want a custom name, you petition a GM for it and pay a fee for the service. This would solve the majority of all naming issues so that GMs can focus on other matters rather than babysit childish players who can't be mature enough to properly name themselves. Seeing everyone with a barf of vowel generic fantasy name would ruin my immersion by making me think ive accidentally loaded a singleplayer game instead of everquest

Of course, then they get in the game, and realize that part of the PnP is ... not quite honest ... but it's been this way forever. I think the staff figures "if we cast a wide net, we can remove any flagrantly bad name", whereas if they tried to make the PnP match reality, some truly bad names might slip through. The fundamental problem is that there is very little motivation to volunteer to be a GM here, and what few saints of human beings we do have are busy with stuff like resolving camp disputes between 40-year-old man-children. There was even a movement to "crowdsource" enforcement a few years back (players petitioned names that violated the policy en masse) ... and the staff told them to knock it off, presumably because they didn't have the bandwidth to handle it. I suspect, once upon a time when they wrote the policy, the staff wanted classic names ... because they wanted classic everything here. But over time, as they've allowed things like pet windows, they've given up any hope of classic names (ie. enforcing their own PnP) ... because it just can't be done with their volunteer limitations.

So I'm gonna assume this is because of "Spags" to OP.... sure he can claim it is short for spaghetti all he wants but anyone that's Italian on this server prolly thinks it's the racist slang version. Therefore even if he yells spaghetti all he wants others can and will still perceive it to be the latter. Therefor it has to be changed even if there is just the chance it's racist. Due to that fact it can make Italian born players on our server feel uncomfortable.
