Generally, going to work is much healthier than not, due to giving people a sense of purpose and the feeling they are benefitting the public or their community in some way. I speak in generalities because there are some jobs or fields where a person might feel they are actually doing harm to their customers such as swindling them out of their money. But generally jobs validate to a person that they are valued, both as a an asset to their company and providing a desired service to their community

The setup for disability in particular is terrible. It encourages people to up-play and exaggerate the things that limit them, which subconsciously can disempower the feeling of control they have in their own lives. And it doesn’t pay shit. I don’t think just paying more money is the solution, but it doesn’t pay enough to allow people to have a life. I talk to a ton of people on disability in my job and a lot of them have no money for hobbies or interests, they don’t even have enough to keep a vehicle maintained and so are trapped inside their shitty apartment 24/7.

I also think that being paid money for nothing, such as being born filthy rich or taking advantage of some social support program that a person deep down REALLY doesn’t need (only a small percent of people do this but it does happen), can distort someone’s personality in a negative way

I always recommend to people in my personal life that are weighing out working vs getting on disability to try to work unless it’s literally going to kill them

Working also creates structure for people and most jobs require socialization, which is a skill that can improve or wane like any other

Evreyone on P99 is an independently wealthy professional who works only because they choose to better the world and not because they need money. Many young doctors, lawyers, and navy seals

Of course it’s about the money, but the spirit of capitalism is about an exchange of goods or services for currency. If the service you provide in your job had no value, people wouldn’t be willing to pay money for it. An employer wouldn’t be willing to waste the time and effort hiring and training the person for it

There is a strong correlation between retirement snd depression. A lot of retirees become depressed because they have lost not only a sense of purpose in their life and the structure that working gave them, but also their identity as well. The most common thing to follow a person’s name when they are introducing themselves is what they do for work. It becomes a part of our identity, even entry level jobs

And no, in these modern times you actually don’t need to work to survive. The government does not want to watch anyone starve to death on the street, so anyone with no income qualifies for food assistance programs, which is is enough free money to feed oneself for the rest of their life if they choose not to work. Shelter would be a big problem but there’s social programs for that too, even shelters you stay at for extended periods of time. Back in the day it was a matter of life and death, you either provided a service you could sell to the public or you starved to death, simple as that. Nowadays it’s better

Like I said, I’d the job didn’t have value the public wouldn’t pay for it and an employer wouldn’t want to waste the resources hiring and training for it. It doesn’t have to be a hot shot doctor or lawyer job to have value. People might forget that it has value but that doesn’t change the fact that it does
