it's a matter of convenience. With porting, you can log in for 15 mins, and port for plat. Or, you can port for 5 mins, go afk 10 mins, port again etc.

It's not necessarily more lucrative to port than grouping at a decent camp or solo mob grinding, it's just a convenient way to make money without a lot of time invested in setting up a group or finding an open camp. That's it.

I don't even have a specific fee for ports. I just let people pay me whatever they will pay, and I have never really been disappointed by it.

Although the one exception is succoring across SG. I would probably not do that for less than 100pp since it can result in death

Theres situations where asking for a flat rate makes sense, like if someone is asking for a string of ports or special services like binds or xfers (can take a lot of time and if they decide to stiff you you've likely missed out on several opportunities by then.) I'm not a fan of asking for a flat rate for a single port, but that's that dude's business. My experience has been that the good will you generate from just accepting a job and executing it efficiently without bringing up money tends to net you more, though.

This server community is very odd in some ways. I have in years past bounced around popular zones on my druid while chatting with friends and occasionally /ooc'ing "porting for plat" without actually naming a price. Doing this for a total of perhaps 10-12 hours I've had almost zero takers (as in exactly one). Of the many possible interpretations, I've settled on two as most probable:
- honesty is despised and unwanted here
- people here deeply desire servants (slaves) who gratefully accept on bended knee whatever crumbs fall from the master's table
Note that these are not mutually exclusive.
