The incentive to get gear is to show off to others that you are cooler than them and have something they don't. On blue you accomplish this because there are thousands of players, many of whom are driving around in a Honda Civic. You can showcase your cool car to everyone with it parked in the EC tunnel. On red everyone is in the same guild and no one gives a shit about your Mercedes because everyone else is driving the exact same Mercedes.
