You guys are forgetting that the SNES didn't come out until two years after the Genesis.

The Genesis was made to trump the NES, the SNES was made to trump the Genesis.

In all honesty, if it wasn't for the competition that Sega offered the SNES would have never turned out as good as it did.
Fair nuff, and would explain why there were SNES purists.

They were both 16-bit. Just snes had double the memory while sgen had double to triple the CPU speed. The sega was more balanced, if sound/music matters to you. Less graphically (mostly in colors) but it had a synth, hence the need for the better cpu, as well as good for graphics effects. That was one of the big selling points of the C64 years earlier, it too had a synth, and was phenomenal for it's day.

Most of the difference was more about the game selection. Sort of east vs west. I've never really been big into eastern style games, apart from like early zelda which was part of the reason I bought both.

True today perhaps, but sega was still worth having back at the time. I had both and I probably played my sega more.

Largely the case because of RPGs and few simple games like mario that are timeless.

I enjoyed them both really. Sega just made some terrible marketing decisions. Lets release a 32x and then immediately release a CD system in the same year. Oh our handheld is failing? Lets release the Nomad. Sega just had a different philosophy. They tried really hard to make SEGA systems seem like bringing the arcade home with you. The Dreamcast was pretty awesome though. Phantasy Star Online was ahead of its time.
I really think this had something to do with 32X and sega CD, combined with the Nintendo golden age nearing its peak. As well as the arcade thing.

You can't tell me Sega didn't completely destroy it's brand identity by the time Dreamcast hit. Dreamcast was a fucking animal too.

PlayStation and Nintendo had serious savage levels of identity at the time, and Dreamcast despite being technically superior never got more than an "oh that looks cool" out of the market.

Everyone was too busy enjoying a sure thing. Sega was so out of touch, really tragic because I'd like to see what they could have done. PlayStation stomped them to death and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

I remember seeing a Dreamcast on display, but it didn't seem to have the game line up to get me to commit.

So much this. Sega got too far ahead of the market and it cost them. Their R and D was superior, but you have to have the sales.

Sega systems all had something in common, they were very complex to program. More could be done with them, but the complexity required wizard programmers, something that just wasn't in great abundance, especially if the market pulled them to better selling systems with higher game distribution. Nintendo and Sony programming specialists could crank out the titles, while good Sega programmers were just harder to find.
