I've always been happy with enchanter + druid.

Druid can give the enchanter SoW and taxi the enchanter around.

The enchanter can give the druid 50pp and clarity so that the druid can port more people for cash in EC while the enchanter solo farms everything.

It's been my favorite duo for sure.

Made for each other:
Enchanter/Shaman
Enchanter/Necro
Shaman/Necro

Pretty rad:
Enchanter/Cleric
Shaman/Monk
Shaman/SK

Interesting duos, but not as overpowered as the ones listed above:
Necro/Rogue (fear kite)
Necro/Ranger (fear kite with better snare)
Necro/Mage (pet ownage)
Necro/Druid (regen, snares, fear kiting with dots)
Bard/Rogue (fear kite/bard tank)
Druid/Wizard (quad kiting duo)
Bard/Wizard (quad kiting w/ mana regen)
Druid/Enchanter (snare+heals while charming)
Necro/Cleric (undead zones)

Pretty much Shaman, Monk, or Enchanter, Cleric is the gold standard on EQ. Others work out, but if you want the best, the previous two are the best way to go. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

One duo that has done very well for me is Mage/Bard.

For me, EQ is a social game and constantly micromanaging my character's position flat-out prevents socializing whether I'm chasing or being chased. I invariably leave groups that decide to employ agro-kiting or fear-kiting as their primary kill tactic. But hey, if it floats your boat go for it, it's not like it disrupts anybody else's game.
You would hate playing a bard then!

Aye, years of live EQ and years more here, and my only bard is a L5 EC tunnel mule.
