To elaborate I can group metal heads into two separate groups that would most likely dog on each others music simply cause it doesn't fit into their "view" of what heavy metal is. Regardless if your skimming the surface and only listening to big names or you're a underground junkie who thrives on the obscure you'll fit into either these two types:

Techfreaks:
You enjoy metal that is fast, elaborate, and intricate. Melody and technicality is what you view as superior when it comes to heavy metal and you cream your pants when odd time signatures and progressive elements are placed in the song structure. You probably spend quite a bit of money through itunes buying songs by bands such as Necrophagist, Nile, Dream Theater, Opeth and the like.

Genre's most enjoyed:
Thrash metal
Speed Metal
Progressive Metal
NWOBHM
Power/folk Metal
Melodic death Metal

and then there are...

Rifflords:

You enjoy metal for the heaviness, giving hail to the all mighty riff, you specifically look for metal that is heavy on the low-end viewing the ability to crumble stone with sheer volume and lowness as the main focal point of what constitutes as heavy metal. You're most likely to spend large amounts of cash via itunes on bands that have an archaic Black Sabbath sound, bands such as High on Fire, Sleep, Eyehategod, and Electric Wizard take precedence here.

Genres most enjoyed:
Doom Metal
Sludgecore
Stoner Metal/rock
Drone Metal
Ambient/shoegaze
Slam death Metal
Down Tempo
Classic Metal

Bullshit, the only good thing Pantera has ever done was crying about Phil Anselmo and allowing him to pursue interests such as Down. When you stop being 15 years old and shopping at Hot Topic and look at Pantera compared to Down you'd simply realize that Phil made better music by leaps and bounds when he wasn't making redneck tough guy music and got in touch with his Doom metal roots.

But then again you probably have got your mouth heavily latched on Dimebag's dick because he is the "greatest gee-tarist evaaar!!11!!" which I guess is true if you like mindless thrashing.
I'm sorry I offended your hardcore hipster sensibilities. We just can't possibly like anything with Dimebag in it! What would all my identical Jerry Cantrell looking, flannel wearing poser friends think!

By the way, any white dude with dreads deserves to be curb stomped.

Dimebag and Pantera are terrible, that's not opinion that is fact.

If you think otherwise, I'd suggest going to more metal shows aside from bands that have been on the billboard top 100.

As for white people with dreads

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX_4ZnMXmhk

This dude is white as hell and has dreads and kicks more ass, and main lines more heroin then you could ever possibly handle, since he is fuckin' metal incarnate.

I'm sorry do you play in a band? Do you have material to post? Have you driven from Indianapolis, IN to the NYC sleeping in a van living off gas station food for days while performing underground shows from the 1511 to the Grey? Do you have a strong regional following from Chicago to Louisville? Cause unless you do, you have little right to criticize my merits.

Hell should I take pictures of my shattered back teeth from fights that broke out involving SxE hardline punks and my band in between sets because I either ran my mouth or they ran their mouth?

Subgenres are dumb. I like Categorizing metal like this...
Metallica
Megadeth
Dream Theater
Nightwish
Pantera
etc....

I think sub-genre are necessary, because there is a very obvious distinction between let's say Motorhead and OM even though both are "metal" they are total opposites on the spectrum in both sound, style, presence and delivery

You had respect to begin with?

I just don't like Pantera, in fact I don't like any metal that strays off from the Black Sabbath formula of skull crushing riffs and wanders into the realms of thrash.

I have a real life friend who is hardcore into Megadeth but he loathes my music simply because he thinks it's just "Drug riddled ambient noise" which he thinks is rather gimmicky because it simply involves around how low you can tune, and how much you can abuse a fuzz-box and how stoned you have to be to actually put up with an hour long drone fest.
