From the outside, it would be nice to grant citizenship for those that worked for the US, UK, etc in Afghanistan. Both as a thank you, but also as without the military backing them these guys will be exposed to ‘retribution’.

I think there was a political reason to leave them behind - that they have spent the last 20 years ‘levelling up’ Afghanistan, so ‘if they did their job right’ they would be safe. Furthermore there is a lot of push against ‘brown’ immigration, at least in the UK.

I think there was also a security reason to leave them behind - translators etc could easily turn into double agents / recruitment / sleeper cells for the tally if they were attempted to be assimilated into the Anglosphere nations which were in Afghanistan.

Something tells me we should have probably evacuated the 15,000 Americans still trapped there, and gotten the 80,000 Afghan SIV's their visa's BEFORE closing Bagram and pulling out all our troops... seems like that should have come first... It doesnt help that our State Dept has been completely defunded by the previous admin and cannot get visas and background checks done for the afghans.

I dont know but it feels like common sense to me, to not assume we would have "time" to do that later... I blame the military and civilian leadership from both the Biden and Trump administration. I think they both played a part in this debacle and both bear responsibility.

Regardless of what political side of the isle you are on, the lack of planning and contingencies is unacceptable and just sad.
