If you think of psychotic suicidal depression as a legitimate illness (I'm not expecting you to, it's debatable, but many do), you could absolutely argue that her words amounted to mens rea and actus rea, a purposeful desire to kill him with his condition. Judging by some of the texts I read, it seemed that way. She acknowledges his mental illness and is quite persistent with linking that to the act of suicide.

All they had to do for involuntary manslaughter was prove he probably wouldn't have killed himself anyway during that time period... which probably wasn't overly difficult considering they had thousands of lines of text of him protesting and resisting before she finally convinced him, over the course of only a few days.

To be more clear the primary defense was that the kid was 100% going to kill himself eventually regardless of her conversation. It was laughable with 20K texts and 1K of them the week of the suicide with her being on the phone walking him through the suicide. Bad bad defense.

Drugs were the secondary component claiming SSRI's made her believe suicide was a good result and that she believed it was the key to Conrad's happinness. A doctor testified for the defense RE: this "phenomenon"
