What can I say? That was the narrative of many of these communities during the election-- an unwillingness or inability to find other work in the face of the death of their industry. So they prostrate themselves before Trump hoping he'll use the government to bail them out.

It's not realpolitik when you leave the entire zeitgeist behind and start advocating for fantasies that will never happen. Whatever happens has to proceed linearly and organically from the wider discussion.

Increasing consciousness and manipulating public opinion this way or that way has real substantive consequences. Convincing the American people to disregard factual evidence for stupid reasons is an ultimately self-defeating endeavor even if you think you're doing it for good reasons... especially when we're watching our peers in Europe and the rest of the West thrive and make real progress using collective authority.

I'll always feel sympathy for a cat because they depend on us, and their situation is totally the result of our actions. An unemployed coal miner in West Virginia who is too good to do anything but mine coal does not depend on me, he's a human being with agency and choices.

The parallel and irony here is that additionally these people will tend to be Republican and spend all day advocating self-reliance and individualism.... until their community implodes due to market forces.
