Many intercity schools here in the wonderful USA have metal detectors on the entrances. There have been zero incidents at these schools.
It has been expressed by the NRA that this is a solution to the problem.

The NRA is a bunch of rednecks who ride obesity scooters at Walmart so you'll forgive me for missing (willfully) their input. However, I do appreciate yours. I'd prefer my children not to go to school in fortresses and instead for uglies obeses and rednecks to have less access to firearms, but in the spirit of compromise, I accept your proposal. It will of course just make the shootings take place outside the school as kids are slowly funneled into the facility through metal detectors, but I'm sure the NRA thought about this and have proposed something else, like a Crow's Nest with a sniper or national guard patrols outside. Anything to avoid actually addressing the problem (ugly people + guns)
