I hate Maher and think he should keep his mouth shout on almost anything dealing with science, but he's right on this one, and you might want to crack a book on evolutionary biology. Viruses reproduce themselves so quickly they rapidly evolve, and the vast majority of time they evolve in a manner to become less deleterious (but more contagious, often including potential new species vectors).
