What would you do in that situation? The entire basis of self defense is that somebody is currently trying to kill you. When you have made no threats to anyone and you are actively running away from people who are trying, at best, to beat you, you are legally permitted to shoot them. The idiots who got shot could have just not tried to mob him and beat him like a school of piranha and nothing would have happened. And btw to the credit of the protesters, the vast majority of them didn't do that.
