I would venture there’s probably even more abuse of behavioral health hospitals than medical ones, because assessments regarding inpatient treatment are just verbal questionnaires, not a medical test, so much easier to exaggerate or lie about symptoms

The better your behavioral health hospital is, the more people that want to go there for inappropriate reasons. Sounds nice when you think “well it’s money one way or another” until you consider your limited bed space and all the people you will be denying. If it’s going to be full either way, it’s better to be filled with people who actually need it

Especially with kids, we inform parents about 3 different types of behavioral health hospitals: Phoenix Childrens gives them pizza and lets them play video games, it’s basically Disneyland that every kid wants to go back to, especially when they lose electronics privileges at home. Phx st Luke’s behavioral is unfun and super strict so more appropriate for kids who want to go for the wrong reason: they won’t enjoy their stay. And Oaisis is usually full of delinquents to the point where we make jokes privately that Oasis is basically Fight Club for kids. I didn't always ask questions. It's easier for most people to stay comfortable and go along to get along. It's easier to follow the herd. But I learned years ago that the crowd is usually headed off a cliff.
