Say what you will about him, but Francis is the equivalent of a radical left-wing revolutionary within the Catholic church. I strongly suspect that if he could he'd bring a ton of common sense decisions, like allowing birth control, to the church. However, just trying to make the smaller changes he's made so far has caused a huge backlash (https://www.theguardian.com/news/201...t-pope-francis).

In other words, I wouldn't blame the pope specifically, as he's actually a force for good and change. Blame the church and all the entrenched conservatives who do things like protect child pedophiles and hold back any liberalization of the church.
