Long story short some guy came into IRC threatening to ddos attack the server because he and/or his friend(s) didn't get immediate GM assistance with some lost items (I think he got scammed out of them? I dunno, the player and petition he referenced doesn't exist).

There's nothing I can do about it really. Even if I wanted to help him, he didn't make reference any valid petitions or accounts, but he also came in probably looking for a reason to flaunt his shiny new rental botnet.

Distributed Denial of Service; flood a target system with so much traffic it either gets bogged down or crashes completely. Requires large amounts of traffic depending on the target system. It is increasingly easy to assemble the computing power required to do these things.

Distributed, not direct. And it usually doesn't crash anything, it just floods the internet pipe of the server so much that legitimate traffic can't get through.

What I don't understand is why people think it would benefit them. I guess if this were a business or some type of monetary/profitable operation, it might motivate someone to work it out with the guy. That's the complete opposite here. Attacking the server does nothing but aggrivate the players, which in turn demotivates the staff.

It has the opposite intent.
