My friend group is the reason they added a box to the game asking if you are sure you want to drop an item on the ground. We would make gnomes and ask to see an item in trade window etc. Usually an item someone was wearing, that way when we saw it disappear from being equipped on them, we knew they had it on their cursor and were about to open trade with us and then we would move, and when the item dropped to the ground, we would pick it up and steal it. Remember you could also disarm players in duels and steal their weapon after it fell to the ground. Got an executioner axe this way back when they were a big deal.
Reminds me of the old dropping cash on a torch big (feature?), where if you had the cash on your cursor and clicked a torch or brazier, you wouldn't get the confirmation box and it'd just drop to the ground. And it got used to rob people [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

i know a lot of people claim that eq wasnt a toxic experience, but ive also seen a lot of people say similar things on here and on reddit lol

i had great experiences, im still friends with some of the people i met on EQ in 1999...

but it definitely felt like a hostile environment

i have a lot of wow friends who ask me about eq and talk about how they prob wouldnt like it because there was no pvp... bro the pve in eq was the pvp. people were constantly being cutthroat and fighting over camps or items. in wow pvp doesnt even feel personal, someone might kill you and then you chit chat with them afterwards and become friends.

in eq it felt like other groups were constantly training you or steal your mobs. and things got really hostile. we had blacklists for a reason.

i think its a wild larp to pretend it didnt exist because i saw the same type of behavior frequently on p99 green. on 3 different occasions when green was new i had a gm show up because of groups trying to steal each others camps (pyramid area in CT was really bad for this, but also a lot of groups in UR stealing mobs from fireplace, high levels skipping passed basement groups to try and get dwarven work boots etc).

this problem was hella worse in 1999, especially on my server. i played on the most populated server in the entire game, they tried to split it twice but it didn't work. i actually went with the original split but it sucked so bad (drinal felt dead) that i went back to tunare and leveled a new character all over again.

also you still see these same problems on TLPs. TLPs have a lot of nice players, ive had complete strangers spend real life money to use a potion to give me an exp bonus on multiple occasions, have made friends on TLP, but without the PNP, KS'ing and sniping is the meta. That's because it always was, lol. Nothing has really changed.

actually i forgot a GM had to show up in mistmoore once too. I was camping dhamp with an entire group. i saw a corpse there, and realized the person was online. i asked our cleric to resurrect him because i knew how hard it would be for him to get his corpse. we rez him, heal him up etc. and then we step out from the little area dhamp is in and start killing the mobs in that garden area.... suddenly the guy we rezzed claims dhamp camp is his because we left the camp (were like 10 feet away).... people start getting heated, and are like no, this is our camp SO HE CALLS THE GM'S ON US. keep in mind he's only even alive in the zone because we went out of our way to rez him etc.

Before the GMs even get there, dhamp spawns, harm touches and kills him almost instantly. He still is arguing with me through /tells that the camp is his etc.

Never met someone that autistic before.

The elitism of live EQ was a different animal than what we have on the emu servers.

The guilds would rather be very exclusive on who they invite and be limited on what/when they could raid rather than have a raid force ready to go 24/7. Seeing as how much more often bosses would stay up I feel this elite attempt to ringfence pixels cost them more than it benefited.

I think also that people just had no clue how to do kill some mobs. I remember when someone finally killed venril sathir... i legitimately couldnt believe it. on my server that dude was up all of the time and getting trained to the zone in KC. Same with trakanon. in 2025 its not a mystery or puzzle how to kill either of these mobs. back in the day though people could have the numbers and would still get rekt by them.

also i remember it beign the meta to run through dreadlands and get killed by gorenaire, similar to how faydedar haunted the oceans. i dont think its that guilds werent big enough, they just werent organized or educated enough on how to deal with these types of mobs etc.

i dont disagree with what you said though, i remember how ridiculous guilds could be back in the day, and a lot of times the people in their guild weren't even good at their class or the game, but for whatever reason, were part of said guild etc.

again, i actually saw this on p99 green when it launched... had an enchanter friend who was obsessed with trying to get into seal team. was rejected. meanwhile due to a shortage of SKs and Rogues, I saw some of the worst people in the game.... players I actually shadow banned from my groups... joining seal team lmao.

VS is one of those few bosses in EQ where operation human wave is massively detrimental to success. It's one of my favourite fights due to this - small coordinated strike force does best.... even though I do love the concept of 200 people rushing dragons too! The devs did really well with the vibe and execution of the VS fight. More like an assassination of a top target than a battle.

I love how RecondoJoe acts like there is such a thing as being bad in a group on P99 for an SK or a Rogue lol
