This is very true. I met one of my closest friends in WoW and we started a guild together that had decent success. Years later we were talking about what we do irl and I found out my friend was a software designer for high end clients and made stuff for the U.S army and MLB. Meanwhile I came from a full time 40 hour a week paycheck to paycheck background.

Its amazing that despite our vastly different backgrounds we were able to forge a friendship out of blowing people up in PvP and raiding.

That's probably my favorite dynamic you see in MMOs. People who would never interact due to RL class disparities rub elbows and get to know each other. There's definitely drug addicts and lawyers working together for different reasons than you'd usually see.

Clerks like myself were good because no life prospects but less mentally healthy due to socioeconomic stressors. Unemployed / disabled was a mixed bag. Either the sweetest or craziest. Anyone with real real life responsibilities who played hardcore was neglecting something hugely important and probably a dick on top of it.

Good analysis.

Ha! No one thinks of the third category.

The idle.

I can work but why? I have enough to live, to do my pursuits, everything is taken care of. I wake up, I go for a bike ride, I farm some cloak, then I take a nap. I go out for dinner, take my date to the hotel, before I fall asleep I check the raid schedule on discord for next day. I'm not rich, but I invested in some real estate, I got some stocks, bonds and bitcoins or whatever. Working on my pilots license.

I mean that's not me. I live in a slowly-flooding basement with one flickering fluorescent tube away from the end. I'm just saying it's not a dichotomy. There's a lot of idle people who aren't crazy and are perfectly employable.

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Are you redefining certain unemployed people as “idle”?

This doesn’t have to be some deep philosophical take: You’re either employed or you’re not.

Well the poll question was "unemployed" not "not employed" so I was commenting on that. Unemployment occurs when a person who is actively searching for employment is unable to find work, that is the traditional meaning.

If you're living off investments or other passive income, you're not a worker but you're also not unemployed. Same if you're a minor and don't need to work because your custodians provide for you.
