Error 1018: Lame

Today, after being away for about a week or so, I try to log in only to be given an error 1018, that's the one telling you you have an active character on existing server, try again in a few minutes. Well, after trying again for about 30 minutes, I petition on boards. After about an hour, I try logging in and it works! /cheers to the staff, or so I thought.

I played a few hours, logged off, and come back about 4 hours later only to be given the same error message. I jump over to the boards thinking I'd see what the issue was only to see a single reply in my petition stating "there's nothing we can do for this issue, sorry." Needless to say, I was a bit upset but wtf can I do. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or know what the cause is? Thanks!

I have this problem only if I don't /camp out.

If I /quit, ctrl+alt+del kill EQ, or any other exit besides /camp, there's a chance I see a 1018 when I try to log in the next time.

I tried looking for fixes like you did and got nowhere.

Just make sure you /camp or prepare to wait 30-60min to log in.

Hi, yea, necroing this thread because the developer responses are strangely off topic. Some accounts are suffering from random Error 1018's that last for hours at a time even when the character was logged out through a successful /camp. The problem will go away and resurface even when the character was never logged in.

For example, I can attempt a login to character select, get Error 1018.
Wait 6+ hours, try again, successful login to character select, logout without even entering the world.
Wait until next day, Error 1018 resurfaces even though I never entered the world.

The last patch notes to mention a change to Error 1018 is here:

Notice that the change is crossed out with a nebulous comment of "upcoming."

Something has remained broken for years since.

tl;dr = use /camp

Camping doesn't solve this problem. You can experience 1018 even when no characters exist on your account or you've never logged in to a character.
