We did this back on live. The push is insane but you can essentially take out any target where the AE isn't too bad or the target CH's.

Is it worth staggering the pets into waves, so the second wave have taken one less round of AoE, meaning you won't have so many pets all dieing at the same time?

Seems like a good premise at least Jimjam! Somebody please film this whenever it goes down!

Dain is a good target for mage raids. The banish doesn't effect pets and he might not even one round pets often. I used to do mage raids on live during PoP and enraging pets that can stunlock mobs to lvl 6000 was insane. Rampage/AEs/adds really get in the way of what can be done though.
Velk/statue/AoW could probably be done. It just takes a really long time. Riposte damage ends up really sucking but with enough mages you can easily keep mobs occupied indefinitely.

Doesnt banish work through pets to the caster (like DT)?

No, it either does nothing or sends pet to where it was summoned. Depending on what type of spell it is. I think phase spiders gates pets to spawn spot.
I killed dain with 4 mages in classic PoP and also three boxed trakanon on p2002 with mage/druid/ranger

In later expansions when necros got the targeted summon short duration extra bonus pet spell line ... theirs summoned 4 small pets vs the mage line which summoned 1 much stronger pet. Necros could chain cast the 2-3 highest in the the spell line for 4 mini skeletons per cast.
As a thought experiment I ended up soloing without mercenary every single high end group named (7-15 million hp) that didn’t have an aoe by just standing there chain casting them down the line having 7-12 little pets up at any point. With a good round each skel could only take a single swipe before dying. With a lucky round a skeleton could live 2-3 rounds. Named always took a dirt nap. No other class other than BL (playing cleric for their pet and slowing) could truly solo these mobs even max raid geared without a mercenary helping. It was possible with BL but touch and go and difficult. A necro could do it easily by exploiting the fact that they could swarm the boss with a horde of tiny pets and the mob could only kill them one at a time. A pet raid here would work similarly. With enough pet classes and a mob that doesn’t cast nasty aoes it’s totally doable. When a pet dies 20-30 others are ready to take over while the dead pet owner just makes another. Simple Zerg mechanics only dead things don’t need rezzes.

If our shitty SK pet is welcome, I would join... mainly to be a small part of such a fun event!

DN spider is different. DN spider proc on hit (and scareling in PoF) are similar to bard Highsun, where they gate mobs, but just shadowstep PC's.
Vox/Naggy have full banishes as do Trak and Dain where they teleport you to a certain spot upon aggro.
