The art direction in Pantheon is not standard high fantasy like in EQ. We aren't going to get Tolkien's halflings smoking pipes with hairy feet. There's a lot more sci-fi elements blended in. Whether that's for better or worse we'll have to see.

To me they look like they were inspired by the halflings from TSR's old Dark Sun world. Dark Sun was far from classic fantasy though: in fact it was almost like a cyberpunk-styled fantasy world.

That's not what I said; what I said was that it was that it was:

Dark Sun was a dark, gritty, and "punk-ish" variation of traditional fantasy in the same way that cyberpunk was a dark/gritty/punk-ish departure from traditional sci-fi. Obviously there was no cyberpunk technology, but magic took it's place. For instance, in cyberpunk a central theme is the idea that technology is not universally good, but in fact has a dark side which is destroying the world. Athas (the Dark Sun world) was literally destroyed by magic, specifically by wizard-kings (who are somewhat analogous to cyberpunk corporations).

There's more too, like Dark Sun's visual aesthetic (which is clearly punk-influenced, and is far more cyberpunk than steampunk or some other punk sub-genre) ... but I'm not going to say that Dark Sun was cyberpunk, because it wasn't; it was just "almost ... cyberpunk-styled".

I see what you mean (kinda) but I think you are being very generous in correlating those pics.

I agree with the guy above, these halflings look like anime elfs, and that is weird to me. Usually I like weird, but not anime elf weird.

This is crossing a line of weirdness I just can't wrap my head around.

Kind of reminds me of gnomes on WOW, but I was able to tolerate them back then I guess because I was younger and could still see them as dorky little cute gnome things.

Pantheon's halflings just seem to have zero connection to what you think of when you read the word halfling.

I would have prefered old style halflings as well. But at the same time i am open to new ideas, will check in game if they do make sense. I agree that they should have named them different. Like they did with the dark elf replacement, the dark myr.

Yes, I still wouldn't like them, but a different name would be better.

They shouldn't sully the halfling name and history of the race from Everquest if they are going to transform the image of a halfling into whatever this thing is.

Perhaps it won't look as silly and childish in the game. Hopefully.

Sound more like forest goblin or perhaps sprite/brownie?
