I remember reading the controversy of the kiss during that time.

I think the albino Klingon was mentioned more because he was an outcast. They were pretty quick to accept him after the whole "proving honor / worth" thing so I believe they were setting up the new "united empire" as not caring about that sort of thing. Besides, Klingons always were more "classist" where if you weren't from a Noble house you ended up with grunt work (or as a scientist lol) - kind of like the Bajoran caste system.

I also thought the Klingon appearance as a whole was... interesting? I guess they're setting it up for before they "contaminated" their bloodlines with the "more humanlike" DNA that isn't spoken of to outsiders? I'm curious where that goes and if it's written into this season.

I vaguely remember something about Klingons being of different races. Hence why they look the way they do in the original, TNG, Into the Darkness and now STD.

Actually there are 2 separate star trek licenses at this time.

Don't have time to explain.

Star Trek Discovery cannot dip into the current timeline or even the TNG timeline, including the entire Klingon IP. The klingons are different because of the IP rights. They have no ability to break into source material that they simply have no license to touch. So they had to slant a lot of stuff in Discovery. The theme song itself is fucked up because of the licensing.

If I find an article explaining the license issue i'll post it

Hrm. I just realized that this series is *after* they augmented their DNA. Now I'm really confused... I wonder if we'll get some form of canon explanation later on in the season.

Well...here is the beautiful thing about Star Trek. There are several timelines or universes. So, is this a separate timeline???

And, remember other timelines can have little or no differences than others and some are radically different.

I was under the impression that it was supposed to be the "original" timeline - I guess we'll see how it develops...

I just watched the first three episodes of Orville and - damn. /mind blown

I like it. I agree with the others that it feels more in line with the Trek franchise I love. I'm rewatching the first two episodes of Discovery as I write this, but so far I agree with Nilgod.
