Why not both? Snag a SegaCD for your Genesis while you're at it.

SNES

Legend of the Seven Stars was a beast. StarFox was a beast.

Genesis ain't got games. It aint got gaaaames. Really thought it was a failed platform during Nintendo's beginning of the "Golden Age" of console gaming. Sega couldn't touch them. Anyone who admitted to owning a Sega in public was considered a fucktard.

Outside of Sonic I never touched anything to do with Genesis.

I enjoyed them both really. Sega just made some terrible marketing decisions. Lets release a 32x and then immediately release a CD system in the same year. Oh our handheld is failing? Lets release the Nomad. Sega just had a different philosophy. They tried really hard to make SEGA systems seem like bringing the arcade home with you. The Dreamcast was pretty awesome though. Phantasy Star Online was ahead of its time.

Just lucky I was one of those kids that didnt have to choose. I had most game consoles as they came out as a kid except TG16 and Neo-Geo. Neo-Geo was just not worth the insane asking price even if Samurai Showdown was a tight game.

ETA: No shame in owning a Sega for me. My friends would come play Mortal Kombat at my house just because of the blood :P

First of all nobody thought you were a fucktard for owning a Sega, second try the library boi, there's hella games if you got friends. Not really that fun single-player.

Genesis was like the Wii of its era (party games) except with actual good games. Every game worth playing on there is a couch coop game, and there's a shit load of them.

Herzog Zwei a beast and nothing like it exists to date, Golden Axe a beast, nice football games galore (4 player), altered beast a beast, streets of rage beast, Ghouls & Ghosts is WAY better on Sega beast, there's hella games word is bond.

I will say a SNES has way better $/minute of fun ratio because the games are "deeper" (longer, more single-player emphasis -- the games were further removed from arcade culture than the Sega library), but Genesis is crazy good my dude and i put that on this life. Different consoles back then actually had different cultures and different approaches to their games, it wasn't as simple as picking the 2 good exclusives a console ever gets and realizing you would be better off w/ a PC. Losing either SNES or Genesis would be terrible.

IDK about that pal. Sega suffered from schizophrenia.

Nobody at my private school was going within 100 feet of that company. The only people who seemed to have Genesis in their house were from public. It could be a regional thing, around here there was definitely a very strong divided opinion. And I'd guess it had a lot to with what Nihilist said, schizophrenia et al.

"kids got a sega, wow. gross" sega 32 X sega CD sega this that. 3 sections for the genesis at Blockbuster Video...gross.

Dreamcast was huge, no idea what happened.

It may have even been a coastal thing. West Siders seemed to favor Sega more than East siders.

You guys are forgetting that the SNES didn't come out until two years after the Genesis.

The Genesis was made to trump the NES, the SNES was made to trump the Genesis.

In all honesty, if it wasn't for the competition that Sega offered the SNES would have never turned out as good as it did.

Technology wasn't advancing as quickly back then. 2yrs difference is nothing, but between sgen and nes that was an advancement from the 5yr difference, a different console generation. snes and sgen were on the same competition level. I think snes cranked out more games though, over it's overall run.

Sega was always into trying to port the arcade to home so the games were very different and this also is a reason why there is a huge lack of RPGs for the Genesis.
Yeah like somebody said yesterday, it was more adult oriented. So you see a lot of more classic style arcade games, C64 style games, even some DOS games of the time. My fav game on gen was Starflight https://youtu.be/RgbkOrZc42k which was originally a DOS game then made it's way to the sgen, though not a straight port as it took full advantage of the better graphics and sound. Early space sim/rpg ftw [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
