I only like fast power chords because they are punk as shit, and I hate guitar solos.

Most jazz is too terse for me - takes a rare player to get my gun off.

Having been a musician most of my life I stopped playing to get away from making that kind of music. While self fulfilling and exciting to play, it's not really enjoyable for most people to listen to. Like extremely pretentious jazz or any other genre, prog metal whatever... The kind of music you need a fucking degree to listen to or to even understand whats going on and why it's cool.

That kind of music doesn't really make anyone but musicians happy. It's why my favorite artists/writers are becker and fagen from steely dan. They figured out a way to make fun interesting music that could be enjoyed my most. Just my preference though. Music is the ultimate subjective topic. Becker is a pretty tasty soloist if you ask me!
I agree with this sentiment pretty much. I grew up playing classical on the piano, then in my early teens slowly got into shitty rock (like Shinedown), then promptly matured out of that phase into progressive music (Satriani and Dream Theater were favorites), then got into white blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan, then slowly into popular music somehow. Groups like Steely Dan really take the technical side and distill down into listenable form. I think they have the best of both worlds. My friends who are jazz musicians love them, and non-musicians sometimes enjoy them.

I feel like if you have been a musician since you were young, you should grow out of the phase "technique for the sake of showing off" by the time you're out of your teens; otherwise, not many people will care about your music except your friends and lonely Necronomicon worshipers. I see it happening every day in the local music scene.

Guthrie refers to Steely Dan chords as "budget jazz chords" - often normal triads with an odd note in the bass.

I am also a supporter of the "technical for the sake of technical sucks" sentiment. I remember in my more formative guitar-playing/listening years seeing Shawn Lane's name on some list of shredders. I checked out some videos on Youtube and thought "Jesus, this guy is fast, but it's just stunt guitar." It wasn't until I checked out a couple of his albums (with Jonas Hellborg and friends) that I came to realize what a superbly musical player he is - he doesn't shred just to shred generally - it adds something to the music. And in fact, my favorite Shawn Lane solo is performed nice and slow on the clean channel (part of it is featured in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc4KWowRBGU). Shawn Lane being the greatest guitar player of all time has very little to do with his speed and is mostly to do with his phrasing and musicianship and writing.

How many non-guitar players have ever heard of Michael Angelo Batio? Dunked

You want to see virtuoso? Check out Richard Galliano on the concertina.... Waltz for nicky is one of my favs. (Accordion Derail)

Idk about the steely dan budget jazz chords....wtf does that even mean. So many ways to play a chord.....you can really call shit whatever you want. It really depends on what else you have in the piece.

I like to think most people can appreciate musicians with virtuoso talent regardless of instrument, style, or education.
