This is just victim blaming and not a valid argument. To make an extreme comparison, it's like saying to the rape victim, "Oh, you didn't want to be raped? Stop dressing so scantily! Stop going out at night to bars and doing what everyone does at bars!"

How about instead of telling people to not take racy pictures of themselves, we tell people to stop illegally hacking into and disseminating personal, private property of others all over the internet. How about instead of telling the victim to not get raped, we tell the rapist to stop raping people.

Well, yes, but not by literally approaching convicted burglars/murderers/etc. and saying, "That's bad! Stop that! Stop stealing things and killing people!"

I mean, I'm not here to provide solutions to these problems. It's pretty clear there are root causes of issues that need to be addressed along with things that are more symptomatic of those issues, such as people locking their doors, rape avoidance, self defense, etc., that can and in most cases should be employed along with treating the root of the issue itself.

I do think teaching people that killing is bad is a step in the right direction. More specifically, teaching people why doing harmful things towards others is bad, and teaching people how to build empathy during childhood could surely only be a positive thing.

So in short, yeah saying "tell people to not do bad stuff" is an over-simplification of a much more complex and overarching set of issues that I do not have all the answers for, but maybe we could start working on that.
