About to crack open this book here in a few minutes. Got some good recommendations from people for it so figured I would give it a shot.

Blindsight by Peter Watts

"Two months have passed since a myriad of alien objects clenched about the Earth, screaming as they burned. The heavens have been silent since—until a derelict space probe hears whispers from a distant comet. Something talks out there: but not to us. Who should we send to meet the alien, when the alien doesn’t want to meet?"

Seems to be reading a lot differently for me now at 30 with a wife and 2 kids than it did when I was taking confirmation classes 17 years ago.

Well, back then I knew what the parables were supposed to teach and what the lessons you were supposed to learn were, what some random psalm was about, etc. But I was just a kid. Big difference between knowing the answers to questions and understanding those answers and what good they are, or between knowing the history of a poem and being able to relate to it. Easier to avoid getting hung up on the "details" now too.

Russian history is fascinating. This one reads like a story making it one of the more engaging historical reads.
