Japan was mulling a conditional surrender prior to the atomic attacks. Whether that would have been an acceptable outcome for the United States is a different discussion entirely.

The decision not to even try to end the war in the pacific peacefully was made by the US. Russia (Allies) had already contacted through official channels, but US spy tech was advanced enough at the time that even tho official channels between US and Japan were not open, the US knew that Japan had admitted defeat and were scrambling to keep anything at all. The firebombings were enough. This country made an example out of Japan, and your defense of this tactic is telling. Accusing me of sophistry? I don't think you know what the word means.
