I started playing in late 1997 in middle school and played off and on for the past 15 years. I still enjoy the game itself but over time the nature of the game and the kind of attitude associated with playing it has changed drastically. I know quite a few decent folk who play the game, but have gotten increasingly fed up when the sperglord count of any group of magic players large or small exceeded 50% of the player base.
It's the little things that add up. Going to the card shop and: Watching these people freak out and ragequit after losing one round in a small casual level tournament. Watching your opponent who you've just beaten turn around and critique your plays because you obviously didn't deserve to win in their eyes. Assholes bragging about how they ripped little kids off in trades. Going to larger tournaments and: Having some asshat playing with foreign cards purposely lie about what their cards do to get an advantage. Rules lawyers fixing game states in their favor because someone didn't announce an effect that would of been part of the game state regardless of action taken by either player. Dipshit calling a judge to give you a game loss because you stood up from your chair to let a person by and the round start clock began before you sat back down. Yeah I know a bit about Magic.

You're older than I thought you were.
It's a good game. Lots of complexity, just a few hiccups in game mechanics. The theft happens because players get so focused on the game and so many players are carrying valuable cards around with them. I don't understand why you can't just enjoy anime without having such a chip about it.

It surprises me that the things that piss you off about Magic amused me. I had an incredible meta game deck at a PTQ in Costa Mesa one year. I was playing in the finals when I heard a kid behind me whisper, "Why is he playing with Flesh Reaver?" His friend responded, "He hasn't lost a game all day." I loled.

I realized that I should clarify my comment about theft: imagine how much theft there would be at a comic or anime con if half the attendees were carrying backpacks with hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of collectibles with a very liquid market. The theft is a symptom of the value, not the players. One or two good thieves can make it seem like a whole big tournament is corrupt.
