They did so voluntarily. Compelling candidates to do anything/something (in this case, release tax returns), in order to get on the (now open primary) ballot, is in direct conflict with the CA Constitution.

I'd imagine it could be argued to be in violation of the 14th amendment of the US constitution as well. The biggest loss here, is that precedent was set for the other 49 states trying to do something like this.

I'd like to know what's in the tax returns of Nancy Pelosi, Gavin Newsome, Diane Feinstein, Kamala Harris, and Barbara Boxer before her, but would never think to make their appearance on the statewide ballot contingent upon their release. And it's crazy unconstitutional, serving to disenfranchise millions of voters.

Depends but once again it is subjective. Did the President use some loophole to avoid taxes during his business tenure? Probably. Is it legal? Probably. Would some idiot start claiming he is immoral based on that? Probably. Would it make headline news if he did? Yes. Has majority of candidates from both Republican and Democrat taken advantage of tax laws? Probably.
