I agree that 2016 and 2017 would have been theoretical better windows, no doubt. But, there was simply no power to even try until the House was flipped to Democratic.

Now, it is just fucking weird. But, I do think it was the right thing to do from the standpoint of not continuing to let trump get away with so much horseshit.
