Hehe, except for the emergency calls part, you're also describing teachers.

Teachers don’t die or get assaulted nearly as much as cops

Even if the rates were the same, which they aren’t even close, being assaulted by a 10yr old vs an adult man who weighs 220 lbs are very different. Weight classes exist for a reason

I've read the "cops should live within their jurisdiction" thing in leftist circles. I wonder how your hypothetical program would pan out in rural counties, though.
I think that would be pretty expensive labor in some spots.

Technically, no, it isn't usually the actual teacher getting killed apparently, but your comment made me go looking for stuff and that one was kinda jarring.

I have a friend who is a teacher who has been hospitalized by a kid she was teaching. He is a repeat biter, he's 14, and she's a petite thirty something. Ancedotal, but they aren't UFC fighters so it's probably not just weight class. Remember that Giant Killer dude?

You’re right, quotas for hiring never work. I retract that.

“The National Fraternal Order of Police reports that as of midnight on 29 June, there have been 194 officers shot in the line of duty so far in 2023 (+30% from 2021 YTD; +6% from 2020 YTD). Of those officers shot, 25 of them were killed by gunfire (-14% from 2021 YTD; -22% from 2020 YTD). There have been 57 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers this year”

Who’s the giant killer dude? Sounds interesting but I don’t remember

By the way, my wife is a teacher, and teachers do frequently get attacked and injured, especially these days as parenting is non-existent and kids are out of control. In South Carolina, one of her colleagues (a dainty, 100 lb young white woman) got picked up and thrown through a window by a 14 yr old black kid who was bigger than I was (kid was 6'4, 230 lb). These days, many people treat their children like their friends rather than their children.

Sounds nice and lovely, but good luck with that

Most professions in life don’t have the possibility of:

You being randomly ambushed and killed with almost no way to see it coming or prevent it

You being verbally abused constantly by the people you serve, every insult imaginable thrown your way

You being randomly assaulted trying to do your job. Just saw a police body cam video of a cooperative drunk woman being arrested for DUI suddenly becoming uncooperative without warning and kneeing the male cop in the balls as hard as she could. How about for other professions, I get to show up at your work, and knee you in the balls as hard as I can, and you can go ahead and finish out your day after that. Oh and not quit either, maybe I’ll do it again tomorrow, and the next day

Having to walk a tight rope constantly to avoid getting in legal trouble doing your job

Having half the county hate you and call you a racist until they need your help, then you can’t come fast enough for them

This means cops can’t keep staffed, which means you get two options:

1. Less cops and long long response times or no response. Crimss like petty theft not investigated ever. Your home break in or car theft will never be solved or even looked at

2. Having to recruit from outside areas
Being a lumberjack or fisherman is far more dangerous than being a cop, and COVID killed more cops than violence during the pandemic (lol).

While it's true it's a somewhat unique job in that someone will randomly shoot you in the face because of what you do, the profession has a high degree of institutional rot. Many sheriffs departments are infested by cop gangs, and countless PD's have a horrible "blue brotherhood" culture where it's almost like a mafia, they look out for each other rather than doing what should be their job looking out for us. (In reality their job is to protect wealth, government, and property, with a little public order on the side.) Horrendous rates of domestic violence and divorce from the stress of their job and the workplace culture.

They need to hire fewer military vets and more 4 year college grads, or stratify between normal beat cops (professionals) and SWAT response type cops (military vets) like they do in some of Europe.

Teachers, Cops both suffer from institutional rot.

I wonder what the common theme is?

Here in Georgia, as it relates to roofers and tree trimmers, the phrase is "if you fall off the ladder, you're fired before you hit the ground"
