I thought about doing this but then i remembered that i can't remember in this much detail my starting points in EQ... [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I remember a few other random moments though. Like a GM event in SK at the bird house and when i dropped my shitty Ranger for my sexy Mage <3

Back before people knew how to farm for plat etc ws a great time for memories.

I remember heaing about these great Cutthoart Rings! And me and my bud saved up to buy a couple. We were so excited! +2 Dex holy moly!

And playing a DE and didnt mind lying to a human to get his plate pants. Apparently one of his people had been kidnapped to Neriak and he wanted info (RPing!). I did't know what he was talking about but I offered to give him some info for his pants. Muhahaha foolish human!

Oh no Griffin! Run into house to hide, Grif hits me through the walls WTF!

Hearing about Befallen for the first time! Everyone lets go find it! OH NO GIANTS RUN!

Zone into Befallen right into a massacre train.

Zone out of Befallen right into a Hill Giant.

Over all you cant go home again. Its all been discovered and seen and figured how best to make that XP and plat. But when it first started, it was purely about fun cause there was nothing else.

I don't have crystal clear memories of my very first EQ experiences. Nothing like a narrative, just moments.

- creating my first toon with the gamma turned all the way down, it is night and raining. I can't see ANYTHING. Took me FOREVER to figure out torches.....then gamma.

- joining an all evil RP guild because I was a troll. No other reason. Didn't even know wtf a RP guild was

- Thinking gate could be cast on other people and being stunned when it was I who was zoning

- running to the guards every 30 seconds because something ran away and I couldn't see it anymore

- not understanding the size of a troll. I sat down and went afk to eat dinner at the zone out of Guk. People couldn't get past me and died due to the frequent trains

- creating a dark elf SK and sitting at the docks in the oasis. Was just chatting with a random gnome. See a Sand Giant walk up and 1 hit kill the gnome. At the same time I hit hide. Never hit that button before but apparently it worked. Me and the SG just stared at each other for a few minutes before he wandered off

- reading actual novels while medding

I'm starting to think it's not nostalgia that makes EQ attractive. On a serious level.

It was the danger and the limitations placed on us.

Read here for some ideas:
http://www.gameskinny.com/9ltw7/mmos...mmo-s-go-wrong

And before someone starts spouting off about how I'm looking through rose-colored glasses (for the thousandth time /boggle... they never learn), I'm playing Wurm Online right now and I'll tell you without blinking that it's better than Everquest was. Tell me I'm looking through rose-colored glasses all you want, but the immersion I've got from Wurm Online BEATS the s*** out of Everquest and kills everything else I've played to this point with NO competition that I am aware of. The merciless mechanics and the limitations (no in-game map, for example) make it immersive. And the reason it swallows you up so much is because you have to pay attention.

You HAVE to pay attention to get by. You become absorbed into the game. You know how when you went outside at night as a kid and every sound was a monster? Well it's something like that.

The first few weeks I played Wurm were the most immersive I have ever experienced in any game. It was brutal and yet orgasmic in terms of the sense of reward I got from it. The moments were burnt into my mind. This became crystal clear to me while stand amidst a clear cut in the mountains. I was on hte perimeter of the clear cut looking at the stars and being wary of wandering creatures. I I could hear the wind. You guys really have to see Wurm to know what I mean, but it was at that moment when I realized that Wurm wasn't a game, it was a world. It didn't feel fake. It felt real. I mean, I know it's virtual, but it struck deep inside me.

Even now I am playing Wurm and the immersion is felt. Several months later. It's unbelievable. Just to give you an example... Earlier I was walking on the edge of the area where I live next to the water. It was winter so everything was mostly white, except the bay. Anyway, I know somebody built a road there because the shore is flat. It must have been a few years ago because I'm fairly sure there's no gravel or cobblestone there now. But anyway, tomorrow I plan on going back to my old house to find the Willow tree. It's a very special Willow tree. Willow trees give a bonus to bows, but it's more than that. Willow trees are rare. I came into Wurm wanting to be a ranger like I was in EQ. When I built my fist house, I had no idea about the Willow tree. When I found out that I had placed my house right next to the Willow tree without realizing it, it became special. Tomorrow I will go back and see if I can pick a sprout from it so I can go back to my new place and plant it. I will also searhc for a different Willow tree to cut down so I can make a bow which I will name Wind Saber.

EQ made me a ranger for life. Every game I play, the ranger is in the back of my mind.

Now, Wurm Online can get boring too if you're on a deed and too well protected and doing the same things every day. But Wurm has an element to it that's wild and free and untamed and DANGEROUS.

Consequences. We need those.

It's all about the need to be aware and the reward of doing it right.

It was the danger. It was the limitations. End of story. My opinion, ofc.
