There was global chat when the server first started but was done away with once the population got to a reasonable level. It got pretty out of hand at times without someone constantly watching it.

I doubt global chat will be implemented until it was added on live.

I kind of like no map.. usually end up being too tempted to stare at it all the time.

You learn the way to where you're going after a time or two anyways and don't need the map.

I do like custom channels though. I don't see how those would affect anybodies gameplay except for the people who set up and use the channels.

Default Classic = goodz

For what it's worth, I am in favor of the pure classic EQ with no alterations. Sure I would change a few individual things, namely adding custom chat channels... but once you start adding one thing here one thing there, it's a slippery slope that ends up making this "EverQuest" like every other game out there... watered down and easy. --> Which is exactly the reason we're here instead of out there playing WoW, SWTOR, or whateverelse game out there.

We like EQ because it was difficult - it didn't give you a map, made you lose an hour's work when you die, you have to find your corpse, which can rot, and it takes forever to level... brilliant.

yep i like custom chat channels... I can live without them though.

Most people use vent these days for raids anyways.

Its just nice to have vent + channel for healers or channel for alpha tank group or w/e.

So people don't get caught up on wrong information in guild chat because not everybody can talk on vent at once.

Usually need more information than what one person is saying at a time on harder fights.

Would global chat break the game? Probably not.
Would global chat give staff yet another thing to babysit? Probably so.

As others have pointed out, this is an old idea - we already tried global OOC on this server for many, many months.

It sucked. Everyone was bitching about it. Drama queens telling their life story. During peak hours, text scrolled by too fast to be read. Constantly trying to /ignore Iillllilillliiililliiili.

The server improved hugely when they got rid of it. It gave us, among other things: useful and informative local communication; nerfed spammers; and EC tunnel as the gods intended it. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Chat channels were added during Velious.

So "global chat" will arrive when Velious gets here.

We're still about half population of what live was, though. I don't know what the pre-requisite population was for a stable gameplay. Probably somewhere around 1000? Of course, most players have a lot more knowledge than they had back then. So maybe that makes up for any slight population shortage.
