I always assumed Xeli got guilt-tripped back into the zerg ranks, or maybe promised pixels and a position of power if he came back (from experience this is common practice!), OR, and this is the most likely scenario, he acted hastily without thinking his actions all the way through, and simply changed his mind a few days later! I never sensed any malice in his short time in IB.
