So is Daybreak just going to copy the concept now? And release a custom THJ server of their own? Seems like the smart play
That would require an actual investment in the IP beyond whatever skeleton crew Daybreak has assigned to making sure "line go up" on krono sales.

This has been Daybreak's problem to begin with. The concept of having to spend money to make money is completely against their ethos. Everything is about what's coming in.

If they staffed their games properly there'd be less bots, scripters, 3rd party program usage and people abusing the TLPs altogether... which should attract the nostalgia crowd a lot more than it does currently.

They really do need to make something themselves to really be more than just some shell of a company there to let live server EQ/Planetside 2 bleed out slowly.

Wasn't some EQ sequel announced last year? Is it on some Pantheon timeline? I can't find much on how that's going [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Realistically, no. THJ was nearly a year into their development, with more really since they piggybacked off the previous works of the two devs when they started. It's like imagine the theoretical that P1999 was shut down, would they try to replicate it? There's an audience for it, but emulator servers work under the blessing and curse that they use an old client of the game and then dev time doesn't really translate into much of anything the live servers could duplicate without putting close to an equal amount of time into to make things work on the live client. Think of WoW classic, they had to get players to download an old client because it was simply too much effort to try and rewind the live servers to get the classic feel.

My predictions on what Daybreak does after THJ shutters would be:
1- Nothing. They eliminated competition, I doubt they have the manpower or appetite to do much soul searching as to why Fangbreaker failed.
2- Some future progression server that cuts every corner to try and mock up the THJ experience. THJ was basically "what if Everquest was a Diablo-like solo gaming casual friendly experience". So expect something to try and achieve that but that requires as little dev time and effort as possible to do so.

3 - Daybreak offers THJ two options:
  • Be sued into homelessness
  • Give us all of your source code, server settings, system32, etc.. so we can launch our own shitty version with krono instead of THJbux

Honestly the source code will almost certainly be something THJ is ordered to turn over. They'll be ordered to give Daybreak anything generated based on/involving the IP.

IDK if anyone else noticed this, but shortly after Project Epoch was conceptualized Blizzard came out with Season of Discovery, basically copying the idea. So probably.

Even during the SoE days, the EQ1/2 teams never had the financial backing or dev team sizes that Blizzard could muster for all their major WoW projects. And DBG is now a sliver of a faction what they use to have. Never will happen. DBG is pretty much the perpetual deathbed of SoE; kept on life support since 2015 by two different entities to milk whatever is left of the fanbases of their games with as minimal effort as possible. The last thing they want to do is hire additional devs to help pull off a radical server variation.

Honestly with Quarm gone if they would just merge Blue and Green I would be pretty happy. The player-base is already super niche and small; once you start splitting it up it starts to feel really tiny.

This is starting to become a huge problem even with WoW. I currently have like 12 different real-life friends who actively play WoW, but none of them are playing the same version of WoW so we can't even play together and it's making the game feel dead.
