facebook kinda destroyed aim. Also text messaging. Aim was big years ago when people's cell phones were still primitive and shitty.

fb chat is trash. constantly loses messages, unreliably reports whether people are online, sends dupe messages constantly, etc. I fail to see how else fb competes with aim.

text messaging remains horribly inadequate for maintaining a real conversation, and etiquette hasn't evolved enough that setting hours is feasible.

Being logged into aim says you are available for an actual conversation rather than being intruded upon. It's more reliable than SMS, facebook chat, or anything else aside from IRC. AIM has been and continues to be the shit.
