Merchants only said this when they were trained away from their spawn point.

Steal all the wands and snap em in two. Recharging and Red Wood Wands are a blight on servers.

Honestly I would have taken the items too and not even felt bad about it, as a stance against recharge abuse and recharging items at non-remote vendors.
