The city of Rome was founded sometime in the seventh century BCE based on archaeological findings. They themselves used 753 BCE as the date. So historians just go with their fancies in this one respect. So yeah WTF its 2711 CE? Well no you see there was this guy called J.C. although there were actually two but this one tackled enough ass and glass for two J.C. so why add another? Anyways this totally bald but also cool man decides to codify the calendar system and it turns out it was pretttttty good for a long time even after like all those dudes. their sons, and even the cities they lived in were dust. To bring it all back around romans modern history began in 753 BCE much like it does in modern climes on 0 CE. This calendar is similar enough to today's that I won't argue the fine point of calenderical extremism but it had a problem in that there weren't enough leap years. This was a problem after 500 years. A bunch of cool dudes came up with all sorts of wild and fun calendar systems but a conservative choice the Gregorian was chosen which we use to this day. I figure the prize was for laziness. How hard can it be to add a leap year.
I guess a more accurate saying would be that this is the year MMDCCI of the Senate and People of Rome. o/ some weird gay thought: always found it fascinating that calendar are in some ways a living document. While time and how we perceive it is fairly universal how we go about codifying the keeping of it is fascinating and can give insight into a culture or people. | ||
