No love for Cyber City Oedo 808? Cyberpunk definitely my favorite anime genre. Love stuff like Serial Experiments Lain, Battle Angel Alita, The old Appleseeds and Bubblegum Crisis, AD Police, Armitage and shit. Cant stand all of the googly eye anime now a days although One Punch Man was surprisingly funny as a parody/satire.

Cyber City Oedo 808 is one of my faves as well - I dont like new anime at all.
Other good ones was Akira, Goku Midnight Eye, Crying Freeman, Shower scene with ChunLi in Street Fighter 2, Urotsokudoji, BioBoosting Guyver, Genocyber, Ninja Scroll etc

My favorite story about anime:

Many years ago, studio ghibli began work on its first film, Naussica. Towards the end of production, they were over budget and looking at shutting down the whole film due to lack of funding.

So they put an ad out in an animation newsletter "help finish this film!".

The next week a 18 year old kid shows up, who had never animated before. He is a talented artist and the staff brings him in and he begins work right away.

One weekend he stays late and animates a sequence with his own direction. This is that sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRLO-w3nX-4

It was the first time anyone had animated a lazer hitting an object, pausing for a beat, and then the object explods & the crew loved it. It was left in the film and became a trope in anime used to this day.

That 18 year old animator was Hideaki Anno the creator of Evangelion. A legend.
