Several years back, I played on one that was hosted here in the USA. It was called Bloodcraft, and it was a Trinity Core emu that started with Burning Crusade and continued with Wrath of the Lich King. It had a humble start of like 15 people and over the course of its 5 year run, it had almost 1400 people logged on at once for a summer stretch.

It had 2 primary and one secondary members of the Trinity Core dev contributer team that called it home, and the whole thing was run for free. No donation gear, no voting gear, x1 rates, ruthless anti hack measures, exceptionally clever DDoS protection (for the time), routine PvP Arena sweeps of cheats / win trade busts... A person couldn't really ask for much more. It ran as a person's hobby and they accepted donations, but it had to be under the table through Pay Pal with every one marked with "gift with no goods or services implied or received."

They got a couple C&D's from Blizzard but they told them to screw off with the reply that it was run with no exchange of money or goods, was run as an Educational purpose exercise, and that all players stated they owned their own purchased client copy of the game. And lastly, the ISP host stood firm when Blizzard put pressure on them and told them to Eff off too, so Blizzard gave up trying. It's the ONLY US hosted WoW server I've seen that was successful with this.

The project ended after 5 years because the host grew bored with the project or possibly just had his fill of the crap and wasn't having fun anymore. A large part of it had to do with the countless, tremendous amount of hours put into bug fixes and script creation made free and public to Trinity Core, which other servers run for profit turned around and used and contribued jack-all in return, not sharing their own work.

I guess the point I'm making with all of this is that Nilbog and friends are goddamned Saints and that sometime down the road, this hobby will come to an eventual end. All great things eventually do.

Before it ends, I see them shutting down current blue and starting new, with all the bug fixes and correct timelines implemented.

FF11 was the only other game I can compare to classic EQ in 1999. It was hard mode to the max - good luck soloing. Lots of time sinks and gearing

Having read what you wrote and after some genuflecting I am thankful beyond comprehension at this point for this server. This is one of the few things in the world that brings me any real joy anymore and for that to happen it puts a good amount of strain on a few people's lives. The kind of people that are passionate enough to live with that and continue on either for passion or willingness to make other people happy are the closest thing we may get to real angels or present day saints. What I mean is that all of the staff here are the fu**ing bomb, thank all of you guys so much.

And thanks for helping to give me some context for P99 in my life Nega.

Kinda regret never playing one. Would really like to see what it was like to solo in that game.

I tried FFXI when it came out. EQ and Final Fantasy were like my favorite games back then, so I was pretty hyped for this game.

Turns out it was just a copy of EQ but made shittier. I played for like 2 months. Nobody wanted to group with my job (White Mage - I guess they sucked compared to Red Mage, go figure) and when they did it was a bunch of Japanese people you couldn't communicate with leveling their 7th job. There was no sense of exploration or "newness" since the game had already been out in Japan for about a year.

The UI sucked, the lag sucked, throwing new American players onto established Japanese servers sucked, being able to "own" mobs sucked, invisible walls everywhere sucked.

I wish I knew what people saw in that game. I spent more time playing Tetra Master online. In fact I think the only reason why I subscribed for more than a month was to play Tetra Master on PlayOnline.

Curious as to when you played and how high level you got. White Mage was the main healing class in that game and was always needed in a group. It wasn't until later and much higher levels did an all melee, tankless exp group with a Red Mage and Bard was the way to go for super fast exp.

The thing I really liked about FFXI was that you really only had 1 character, one name. So if you had bad rep or sucked you wouldn't get invited to groups. Are you sure you wen't just bad at the game for the time?

FFXI took some elements from EQ but was hardly a copy.
