To the OP. My first toon on Red I did just what you are asking. I even did trade skills to make my own armor. Even raised fishing to eat. I sort of wanted to start out like I did in 2000 with nothing given to me but earned.

But you had better have thick skin because you will get your ass handed to you OFTEN with twinks butt raping you with a LOT better gear and mana pool to use. But I found it very rewarding to go that route. Lot of satisfaction knowing what you have you earned the hard way. And you learn a lot of new zones and areas doing it. I would highly recommend you doing it.
This.

Here is the Yumyums enchanter gear starting fresh on red:

Advisor robe - given to me.
2x oppaline earrings - camped them myself.
Siren hair hood - given to me.
Split paw tooth necklace - looted.
Drake hide leggings - looted with sola group.
Drake hide arms - camped
Incandescent gloves and mask - quested.
Rod of insidious glamour - quested.
2x 5ac 55hp rings, 7cha bracers x2, 7mr bracers x2, 9mr neck - all crafted for me due to a fortunate high level rare spawn I stumbled upon. Someone paid for the info.

135int/219 charisma self buffed. 900hp/1200mp self buffed. Also current with most all my researched spells via tradeskilling.

I realize melee can be a little tougher but at level 42 I feel pretty sufficient. Anything is possible, even on a low pop server.

generally 4/5 people I'm grouped with a lot are large races because they can't afford the gear to be an awesome tank as a dark elf per se hehe.
Fatties are an epidemic on red. The slight pvp advantage from bash and racials (plus the STA as you said) means everyone is ogre or troll. It's pretty sad really. Devs should disable creation of big races for a bit imo.

Yeah you just better be quick and never ever wash your hands because you'll come back to find your poor cleric that just got C2 dead and oom [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

If you're looking to use rusty swords, it's gonna be rough. But that's your choice. You can buy/beg been items pretty easily on red, the higher levels always want to add the low ones stick around so most ppl are helpful

The slam advantage of a large race is too great to pass up. If kick interrupted at lower levels you would see more diversity in tanks

My cleric was lvl 6 on friday

[You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Today I dinged 29, and have mostly leather with a few ringmail/bronze armor pieces. The most I've been given was 15p from Andain. I've had to skip a few non-essential spells, but for the most part if you kill things that net you at least some money, you'll be fine.

The group XP bonus is what does it. Get 6 nerds together and go hit Crushbone -> Unrest (sometimes you'll see twink scrub PKs in here though) -> Mistmoore.
