Nietzsche wrote in one of his books about the danger of mistaking cause for consequence. His primary example was that of a local man who lived to be a great deal older than was the average at the time. When people asked the man, "what's your secret?" he would respond that his longevity came from eating an extremely meager diet. Nietzsche was quick to point out that this man did not live a long time because he didn't eat very much- he didn't eat very much because he had an extraordinarily efficient metabolism that could sustain him on very little food, and was, in fact, the true cause of his longevity.
