He never "got" modern trek. Pretty sure he only looked at the inherently silly TOS episodes, and built off of that. All that evolved society stuff was flushed out ds9's faulty airlock.( Obrien will get it fixed next Tuesday)

My thoughts exactly. I was watching all sorts of interviews with the cast of the new Trek movies and on several occasions the actors were telling JJ how certain concepts would of been ridiculous in the Trek universe.

Also they would never use any expanded universe stuff due to the royalty mess that would arise. Those books are not work for hire as far as I can tell. They were a separate entity/ip when lucas was around. Not sure now.

It's totally different than the marvel/sony stuff. Example: The wolverine is basically lifted entirely from larry hama. With no credit


Now they can steal the comic book stuff. But I would be surprised if they do any expanded U stuff.
