Best move is giving up on the perfect cast..
Summon fire pet, dont buff or anything, pull with lvl 1 nuke, pull to pet, wide circle if you have to for pet agro, most of the time you wont. Then, run off more than the distance it would take a free running mob to get to you while you are summoning a new pet (sometimes I wont even see pet in clip plane), I usually go twice the distance but ya don't have to (most people will run up on pet first, or in the general area around him for pvp). When pet is getting low, start resummoning, the 5pts of dmg aggro you have will be easy for new pet to get control of. When mob is at 5%, click focus item, cast low lvl nuke, full exp win. Repeat. Can be rough at mid points between spell lvls, just cast more pets.

Like it was said above weapons on pets only makes a difference in damage if the damage on said weapon is greater than half the max damage for that pet (ie. 7 dmg sword hits for 14 max). From 24 to 39 you can give your pet 2 weapons to get it to dual wield. Unless you're going for the procs there's no reason to give your pet weapons after 39. Not that I can think of anyway

If you look at the pet guide it lists the max melee damage and spell/damage shield damage for each spell level. Summon one and kill something. You'll usually see at least 2 or 3 hits that are all the same. That's the max for that pet. If it's less than the wiki value for that pet reclaim and summon again
