Play whatever you have the most fun playing. Not helpful advice, but it's good advice. I played a cleric for 51 levels before I gave up on it because I was having no fun with it. Every class can be useful to a group and if you find that people are discriminating, start the group yourself. Most people LFG are LFG because they're too lazy to take the initiative.
Also, monks really aren't that gear dependent to be effective. 100p for a Wu's Staff and 500p for a pair of 5/55 rings and you're golden. Play an Iksar if you want to cheat. You can gear up on your journey and have a lot of fun doing it. As far as other classes go, spells are the most important thing for casters, appropriate weapons for everyone else. You don't have to spend a ton of money on a toon to be effective. I've seen players with virtually nothing for gear outplay twink #76893567 with 500,000p in gear. If you can play your class well, the gear isn't so important.

I've only been around here for about a year or so and still don't have more than a few hundred to my name at any time (not complaining). Even still, I've found it to be no problem equipping a warrior.
One person's trash is another person's treasure, and with all of the weight at the top levels, there's a lot of "trash" to get you to the later game. I've "twinked" with whatever I could afford from my meager loots. I even found a Sarnak Battlehammer (quite an excellent weapon) on a vendor (which was way underpriced-- like under 20pp, iirc).

Oh yeah, but you will hardly notice the xp penalty. Unless you were playing a Halfling War/Rog.
