What's a wizard carrying around all the time that the extra 5 str will keep him from being encumbered? If you're walking around with 8 regular backpacks, those backpacks alone are 24 stones. If you're filling them with fine steel weapons, crushbone belts or whatever else that doesn't stack, you could put all of your starting points into str and you're still going to be encumbered. Sta is still the way to go.

5 STA is 12 hp at L60, and less before. 5 STR lets you loot one additional FS weapon in 50-100 groups, for a total of maybe +500PP from 1-50. Or you could just get mage bags.
Conclusion: stats other than INT don't matter; the only issue is were you smart enough to roll gnome

My preference is for the STA, and to put everything into STA. But that's generally only a good idea if you are strictly concerned with being an end game wizard with BIS gear. With that stuff + a chanter buff you'll be capped with a few extra HP's to boot.
The HP gains are admittedly marginal, but every little bit helps.
